‘Ser-en-dip-i-ty’ comes from the Arabic name for Sri Lanka, ‘Serendib’, and means ‘an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident’.ceanica
Here at Isana, we like to think of ourselves as just such a discovery though in our digitally connected world, it need not be an accident!
Located near the southernmost tip of the tropical island of Sri Lanka, Isana seeks to combine the best in modern design and traditional hospitality. An architect-designed contemporary beach house sits on one of the southern coast’s finest stretches of sand, Seenimodara Bay. In the local language of Singhalese, ‘seeni’ means sugar and with one look at the sand in front of the house, the resemblance is clear. The crescent shaped bay stretches for about 1.5 km, perfect for an early morning jog or leisurely stroll at sundown. The sea is a translucent blue and very swimmable with a gentle gradient and nothing but sand underfoot.
An ample garden with over 30 coconut trees provides plenty of cool shade from the tropical sunshine, where sun loungers and hammocks are available for guests’ use.
Unlike many of Sri Lanka’s south coast beaches, there are neither wall-to-wall restaurants and guest houses, bothersome beach boys nor the sound of traffic from the Galle Road. At about 200 kms from the capital, Colombo, Seenimodara remains pristine and with a 500 metre distance from the main road, one never need be disturbed by the sound of a car horn or the screech of brakes. Yet with the newly constructed southern highway due to be extended to Matara shortly, we will be accessible within 3 hours of the capital, and only 45 minutes from Hambantota International Airport which was opened in 2013. Paradise need not forever be inaccessible!
Isana Beach House comprises 6 ensuite bedrooms, with 1 twin bed room and one 2 bedroom family suite. All have ocean-facing balconies, private bathrooms with hot & cold water, ceiling fans, mosquito netting and king-size double beds. With a constant sea breeze, open-plan design and a concern for the environment, we feel confident that you will not need air-conditioned rooms. An additional feature is a private safe in each room to keep your passport, money & valuables secure at all times. Room service will make-up your room on a daily basis and our friendly staff are always on hand to help with any questions or concerns.
At Isana, we know the importance of good food. Fresh fish and seafood arrives daily from local fishermen, while we try to source the freshest vegetables & fruit for our guests. As a result, our restaurant can offer a variety of delicious local and international dishes, while a licensed bar will have a range of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails to help watch the sun go down and the night light up. Our restaurant is smoke free and guests can eat either inside or in the garden, weather permitting.
For those guests looking to venture around the area, there is whale & dolphin watching at nearby Mirissa, turtles at the protected beach at Raekawa, ‘Little Sigirya’ Rock Temple at Mulkiligara, the lagoon & Bat Tree at Weerakitiya, and the bird sanctuaries of Bundala & Kalametiya within easy reach”
Finally, Isana is ideally located to explore the historic port city of Galle to the west or the world-renowned Yala National Park a couple of hours drive to the east. Ella and the dramatic Southern Hill Country are also only a 2-3 hours away by road, and from there lay the tea plantations of Nuwara Elliya and beyond to the ancient capital of Kandy. In the unlikely event that you ever tire of our friendly guest house here on Seenimodara Bay, the island of Sri Lanka offers an array of ‘accidental’ discoveries.
